Homeschooling, Honestly

The myths, and the reality.

If you're new to this, you've heard some things. Most of them aren't true. Families choose homeschooling for every reason, faith or secular, academics, flexibility, or a child who needs more. Here's what's actually so.

Myth
"Homeschooled kids can't get a real diploma or go to college."
Fact
Homeschoolers earn parent-issued transcripts and diplomas and are admitted to colleges of every kind, from state universities to schools like MIT, Stanford, and the Ivy League, which publish their own homeschool admissions guidance. Most don't even need a GED.
Myth
"Homeschooling is barely legal, or only allowed in some states."
Fact
Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states and Washington D.C. There is no federal law. Each state sets its own rules, from no notice at all to some annual paperwork, and once you know yours, staying compliant is routine.
Myth
"You have to be a certified teacher to homeschool."
Fact
No state requires a teaching certificate. Most states have no parent qualification at all, and the few that do ask only for a high school diploma or GED. You do not need a degree in education to teach your own child.
Myth
"Homeschooled kids aren't socialized."
Fact
Homeschoolers grow up in the real world, not one room of same-age peers. Friendships and skills come through co-ops, sports leagues, clubs, church, volunteering, and community classes, often with more contact across ages than a school day allows.
Myth
"Homeschooled kids fall behind academically."
Fact
Homeschooling lets you move at your child's pace, faster where they're strong and slower where they need it, instead of teaching to the middle of a class of thirty. Colleges evaluate homeschool applicants on transcripts, test scores, and coursework like everyone else.
Myth
"They'll miss out on sports and activities."
Fact
Many states let homeschoolers join public school teams, and community leagues, co-op teams, arts programs, and clubs cover the rest. The NCAA even has a defined eligibility pathway for homeschooled athletes recruited to college sports.

And when you're ready, the State Compliance Helper inside Forge Learning Academy walks you through exactly what your state asks of you.

Our Story

Built by a family who lives it.

I'm Carlos. Courtney and I did not build Forge Learning Academy from an office. We built it from our kitchen table, surrounded by our own kids.

We met as teenagers with almost nothing. We grew up in poverty, became parents while we were still in high school, and decided right then that our children would have more than we did.

In 2016 I joined the Air Force to give us a real start. I served five and a half years as an electrician until an injury on active duty led to my medical retirement in 2021. From there we bet on ourselves, building a real estate investment company and a business consulting company here in Florida. When the world changed after Covid, we made the call to bring our kids home for good.

Today we are raising five children. We homeschool four of them, in grades 9, 6, 3, and kindergarten, with our one year old coming up right behind them. I am months from finishing my bachelor of science in finance, because we believe in modeling the work we ask of our kids.

Everything in Forge Learning Academy comes from our real life. The trades, because I built a career with my hands. The financial literacy, because we clawed our way out of poverty and learned money the hard way. The character, because that is what carried us. This is the tool we wished existed, and Courtney shapes it every day from the reality of teaching our own children.
